Ms. Girimaji is the project coordinator for the WIC projects funded by the Texas Department of State Health Services. Asha has been involved in the development, implementation and evaluation of the Texas Food and Nutrition Questionnaire and National Food and Nutrition Questionnaire surveying WIC participants prior to and after the new WIC food package rollout. She coordinated the Texas WIC Kiosk pilot project to determine the feasibility of using kiosks in clinics as an alternate means of nutrition education. Asha oversees the graduate and undergraduate students working on these projects.
Asha also serves as a nutritionist at the WIC clinic in Bryan, where she coordinates an obesity prevention program targeting both the clients and staff. The goals of this program are to motivate and empower WIC clients to shop for nutritious foods and use low fat ingredients, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Cooking demonstrations, physical activity and a vegetable garden are key features of the program.
Asha’s areas of interest as a researcher are the development and evaluation of obesity programs as well as, policy changes focusing on WIC participants.
